Milwaukee Hurling Official Honored in President's Awards
An influential figure in the North American GAA has received a prestigious award in recognition of his contribution to promoting growth in hurling in the USA. Dave Olsen, of the Milwaukee Hurling Club, received one of the GAA's President's Awards presented at a banquet at Croke Park on Saturday April 1st. The awards were established to give formal recognition to the achievements and commitment of individuals throughout the Association.
Mr Olsen was the driving force behind the development of hurling in the predominantly American-born club, and has proven the point that hurling has plenty of room for growth regardless of Irish emigration trends. Karen Fink, a spokesperson for the club, said that they are "proud to have one of our own honored with the prestigious GAA President's Award. The MHC has covered a lot of ground these past eleven years and there are many people who can take credit for where the club is today. However, it is undeniable that we would not be where we are today without the vision and drive of Dave." The Milwaukee club currently has over two-hundred members, a youth league, eight coed teams, Camogie teams, and three teams competing in the NACB Championships. "Hurling and the Milwaukee Hurling Club are the passion for this ultra-passionate man," Ms Fink added. "He helped make possible what many thought to be impossible - bringing hurling to Milwaukee, Wisconsin." Outgoing GAA President, Sean Kelly, said “Whether on the field of play or through the involvement of our members at Club, County or Provincial Council level, the GAA has always been fortunate to possess outstanding individuals who have served the Association with distinction”. He continued: “The President’s Awards are an opportunity to recognise their dedication and commitment to the Association in a formal manner.” For the Milwaukee Hurling Club see www.hurling.net.
